Prosthodontics Q & A

What are dentures?

Dentures are oral prosthetics that are designed to replace many or all of the teeth in your smile. Advances in dental technology over the years have greatly improved dentures, making today’s dentures significantly more comfortable and natural-looking than they used to be.

Why types of dentures do you offer?

The Dental Office of Dr. Igor Babenkov, D.D.S., offers a few different types of dentures, including:

Complete dentures

Complete dentures are designed to replace all the teeth in your dental arch. They’re made up of an acrylic base that looks just like your natural gums and holds your artificial teeth in place.

Partial dentures

If you still have some healthy teeth in your smile that you want to keep, then partial dentures are for you. Partial dentures have holes in their base that fit around your natural teeth so that your replacement teeth and natural teeth can work side by side.

Overdentures

Overdentures are dentures that are designed to fit on top of dental implants or an underlying natural tooth (commonly the roots of your canine teeth). By providing continued stimulation to your jawbone, overdentures are great at preventing the bone loss and jaw shrinkage that can sometimes happen with more traditional dentures.

Removable dentures

Removable dentures can easily be taken in and out of your mouth, are available as full or partial dentures, and are typically held in place by suction or a dental adhesive.

How do dentures feel?

Your dentures might feel slightly uncomfortable as your mouth gets used to having them in. This is to be expected and is due to the fact that the muscles of your face, jaw, and mouth have to learn how to properly hold your dentures in place.

During this initial period of adjustment, your dentures might feel loose or bulky, and you might notice an increased flow of saliva. In some rare cases, you might experience soreness or temporary nausea.

After a few weeks, however, your mouth will start to feel normal again, and should actually feel better when eating or speaking. Once you get used to them, your mouth might actually feel more awkward when you’re not wearing your dentures!
